Why does Fountain City need a skate plaza?
>
view National award winning documentary on "Skateboarding in Knoxville"
Skateboarders in Fountain City do not have a public and legitimate place to congregate and practice.  We need to get skaters off the streets, out of parking lots, and create a positive atmosphere surrounding this sport.  Families are driving hundreds of miles each year to skate plazas throughout our region, and a skate plaza in our community will immediately fill the needs of avid skaters and beginners.

Is Skateboarding Safe?
Skateboarding is an energizing sport with awe-inspiring jumps and acrobatics, yet the Consumer Products Safety Commission ranks it twice as safe as riding a bike and four times safer than swimming in a pool. Most accidents and injuries involving skaters occur outside of skate plazas in uncontrolled environments like city streets. top of page

Where will the Fountain City Skate Plaza be located and what will it look like?
The skate plaza will be located on Knox Rd. on existing city-owned property between Maple Dr. and N. Broadway. The site was chosen because of its high visibility, ease of parental supervision and police observation, access to refreshments and public transportation, and limited impact on residential areas.   It will be plaza-style skate park which has two-levels, 7200 sq. ft. of paved surface area, a small gazebo/shelter, pillion, a bleacher, sidewalks, and landscaping. The facility will be designed to be compatible with BMX free-style bike riding and in-line skating.   The city is also seeking separate funding for an adjacent greenway that will eventually connect Fountain City Park with Adair Park. The skate plaza and the greenway will be part of a beautiful neighborhood park along First Creek that the entire community can be proud of and enjoy.  top of page

Who will maintain the Fountain City Skate Plaza?
The skate plaza will be operated and maintained by the City of Knoxville. It will be open from dawn to dusk, with no additional lighting for nighttime skating. top of page

Who's paying for the Plaza?
The concept for the plaza was created through a collaborative effort of parents, youth, community leaders and city officials. Funding will come from a variety of public/private partnership opportunities that include the city and county governments, state grants, foundations, businesses, parents, and the community at large. Any excess funds raised will be used to enhance the adjacent greenway and neighborhood park. top of page
